Storage is always a difficult problem to solve for a lot of crafters. I’ve been using fabric storage boxes to store my yarn and craft supplies but they became moldy because of the humid weather in Hong Kong. I’ve looked around the shops but could never find one that suits my needs, they are either too expensive or the size just does not fit. Therefore, I decided to make my own one! I’ll show you my DIY wire mesh shelf storage project. It’s very easy, quick and cheap to make, let’s get started!
What you need
I bought all the DIY supplies from Daiso (Japanese Dollar Shop)
- Big Wire Mesh (62cm x 29.5cm) x2
- Small Wire Mesh (44cm x 29.5cm) x7
- Zip Ties
- Caster Wheels x4
🌟 Tips & Reminder 🌟
- This DIY shelf storage is made to store light craft supplies (mostly yarn). It is not suitable for heavy objects as each wire mesh can only hold maximum 3kg of weight.
- Pay attention to the weight capacity of caster wheels.
- Size of fixing plates of the caster wheels should be similar to mesh size.
How to make DIY Wire Mesh Shelf Storage
- Use big wire mesh as vertical sides of shelf storage and a small wire mesh as the bottom. Tie their corners together with zip ties.
- Install layers of shelf at your desired height. Fix them with zip ties.
- Make the back of the DIY shelf storage by connecting 3 small wire meshes. If the connected wire mesh is too long, you can overlap parts of the wire meshes and fix the overlapping parts with zip ties.
- Fix the back of shelf storage to the other parts of the shelf storage with zip ties.
- Install caster wheels at the corners under the shelf storage. Fix them with zip ties.
- Cut the loose end of zip ties off. And it’s done!
DIY Wire Mesh Shelf Storage Review
This DIY shelf storage fits under my desk perfectly. I only use it for light-weighted stuff such as yarn and craft supplies so there is no overloading problem. The see-through style shelf storage allows you to find the yarn you want very easily. You can also add hooks to the wire mesh so that you can hang even more things on the outside. It has made my life so much more convenient. Since the storage is movable, I simply slide it out of my desk when I need it and push it back when I don’t need it. My room becomes so much more organized and spacious.
