Last time I’ve introduced to you how to start crochet with Magic Ring, Slip Knot & Chain in Crochet Tutorial | How to Crochet: Magic Circle, Slip Knot & Chain (Video). In this tutorial, I’ll show you some basic techniques that allow you to finish many crochet projects – Single , Half Double, Double and Treble Crochet (U.S. Term)! You can also learn how to control your stitch tension through practicing these techniques.
Suggestions to beginners:
Use Mid-Weighted Yarn
It’s a lot easier to see your stitches and count your chains when you use mid-weighted yarn to practice. Make sure you use a hook of the size that matches your yarn. If you are not sure, just check the label of your yarn. The manufacturer usually suggest on which size you will need.
Use Ergonomic Crochet Hooks
I’m using aluminium crochet hooks but it’s easy for beginners to suffer hand pain because you don’t know how to manage the strength of your fingers and you will undergo a long time of practice. Unlike aluminium crochet hooks, ergonomic crochet hooks are made to minimise pain from crocheting. They usually have a bigger silicone handle which has a more soft touch and is easier for you to hold! I have listed my recommendation below.
The aluminium crochet hooks below are exactly the one I always love to use. The hooks ranged from size 0.6mm to 6.5mm which is suitable for almost all types of yarn. I love using lace yarn so this is perfect! It also came with a purple case which keeps everything organised.
Don’t Crochet Tight!
Do not hold your yarn too tight. You will have trouble making movement with your hook. Your hand will be in pain pushing your hook through tight stitches. Your project will curl and end up in a weird shape as well. Also, make sure stitch tension is the same for each stitch.

Step-by-step Instructions
Single Crochet (SC)
- Start with a row of chains. There’s no specific number of chains you will need. I usually do 10-15 chains just for practice.
- Insert crochet hook into the second chain.
- Yarn over. (Move your hook from left to right through the bottom of yarn. Twist your hook so that you can pull the yarn using the tip of your hook.)
- Pull yarn through the first loop. There will be two loops on the hook.
- Yarn over. Pull yarn through both loops on hook.
And the first SC is done! - Repeat the above steps until you finish crocheting in all chains.

- Insert crochet hook into the 3rd chain.
- Yarn over. Pull yarn through the first loop on hook.
